The Plant room is where the equipment that cleans, sterilises and heats the water is housed. Topsham Pool plant room equipment is old and needs to be replaced. This will mean it can continue to do its job now and for years to come.
The water must be filtered, bacteria and other potential sources of infection must be killed or removed, and the water must be the correct temperature and not cause skin irritation .
The filtration must be controlled at the correct rate, and this needs to vary depending on whether the pool is in use, the number of bathers and factors that affect the clarity of the water (for example, how much sun cream is used by bathers).
As well as filters and chemical disinfection, ultraviolet light is used to further disinfect the water (and reduce the use of chemicals). The main filtration system uses huge tanks of sand, but these need monitoring, and cleaning.
The water for the pool (and the showers) needs to be heated to the correct temperature.
Ideally, we would like to use newer solar panels to generate some of the heating and electricity required to run the plant room. It takes a lot of power to pump the water around the pool and through the filters, as well as to heat the water.
